A 24-year-old man was charged Monday in the abduction of a teenage girl after he threatened suicide and held lawmen at bay for nearly three hours before surrendering.

Mark William Tarbet was charged with aggravated kidnapping and was being held in lieu of $60,000 bail, said Deputy Cache County Attorney Jeff Burbank.Sheriff Sid Groll said that about 10:15 p.m. Sunday a gunman forced a 17-year-old girl into a pickup truck as she walked home from a church function.

The girl was taken to a residence, kept there for about two hours and then dropped off at another location, Groll said. She walked home and told her parents, who notified authorities, he said.

Groll said investigators interviewed the girl and staked out Tarbet's residence, then followed him when he left shortly after 6 a.m. Monday.

He said Lt. Bob DeGasser spent more than two hours negotiating with the man before he surrendered.

Aggravated kidnapping carries a penalty of five years to life in prison.
