A public meeting will be held at the Memorial Building on Wednesday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. to get public input on how to best provide law enforcement for the community.
The Eureka City Council voted on May 14, at regular council meeting, to conduct the public meeting. Eureka Mayor Don Trealor urged residents to attend and said those not interested enough to participate waive their rights to complain about the results of the meeting. The council must decide whether to hire a city police officer or to contract with the county sheriff's office to provide law enforcement.
In order to hire a city police officer it will be necessary to increase property tax by 41 percent, the maximum allowable under law, to provide $10,273 toward the approximate $25,000 annual cost.
