Fighting for a chance to compete in the upcoming NCAA Golf Championships, the BYU golf team stands in a tie for 11th place after first-round play at the NCAA regional qualifying tournament Thursday.

The Cougars, who shot 287 for the day, must finish as one of the top nine teams in order to advance to the NCAA championships next week.Arizona currently leads the tournament at 273, followed by UTEP at 274.

The Cougars were led by Ryan Rhees and Dean Wilson, who shot 71s. Other scores were Mike Weir 72, Ramon Brobio 73, and Eddie Fryatt 74.
