More than 1,000 Brazilian labor unions have called for a general strike June 6 to protest salary curbs and job layoffs.

Labor union leaders said Friday the walkout will be led by the Consolidated Workers Central, Brazil's largest umbrella organization that represents 1,000 unions, and separate unions representing workers in the petroleum industry, construction, public administration, ports, urban services and banks.For the past two days train service in Rio de Janeiro and other six cities have been paralyzed by a strike protesting a decision of the government to dismiss 360,000 of 1.6 million public employees.
