Arizona State made up seven strokes Friday on first-round leader Arizona and pulled into first place in the team standings following 36 holes of play in the NCAA Western Regional Golf Championships.
The ASU Sun Devils were alone at 21-under par 555 going into Saturday's final round. Nevada-Las Vegas, which also overtook Arizona, was three shots back in second at 558, and the Wildcats dropped to third at 559.UNLV's Hub Goyen fired a 4-under par 68 on the 7,040-yard New Mexico State University Course to share the medalist lead with Arizona's Jim Furyk, both at 8-under 136.
And defending NCAA champion Phil Mickelson of ASU moved into a tie for third with his second-round 67. Mickelson and Pacific's Thomas Ljung both were a stroke behind the co-leaders with 137s.
The low eight teams from the Western Regional advance to the 1990 NCAA Golf Championships, May 30-June 2 at Tampa, Fla.
Texas-El Paso was fourth in the team standings at 16-under par 560, followed by Nevada 564, Southern Cal 567, San Diego State 569, Oregon 570, and New Mexico 571.
Stanford was 10th at 572, while Brigham Young and Fresno State were tied with 575s, followed by California at even-par 576, Pacific 577, host New Mexico State 583, Hawaii 584, San Jose State 587 and UCLA 592.
New Mexico's Brian Cortan also tied for the low round Friday with a 67, giving him a 6-under 138, along with three other players. The others at 138 were USC's Dave Stockton, Tim Todd of San Diego State and Arizona's Manny Zerman.
ASU's Per Johansson was in a 4-way tie for ninth at 139 with Stanford's Christian Cevaer, Warren Schutte of UNLV and UTEP's Paul Stankowski.
