Engineers made final preparations Saturday for the overnight start of the countdown of the repaired shuttle Columbia, with all systems "go" for a blazing predawn launch Wednesday on a 10-day astronomy mission.

The shuttle's carefully scripted countdown was set to begin at 1 a.m. EDT Sunday with the space plane's seven-member crew - a post-Challenger record number of astronauts - scheduled to arrive at the Kennedy Space Center later in the day for final preparations. If all goes well, Columbia will light up the sky with a fiery liftoff at 12:38 a.m. Wednesday to kick off the 36th shuttle mission, the fourth of nine planned for 1990.
