Weimar, a city that in the last century stood as one of the cultural bastions of eastern Europe, will be the site of a full-scale arts festival this summer.

Co-sponsored by both the East and West German governments, the event represents the first such cooperation between the two on a major festival since the division of Germany following World War II. Running from July 16 through Aug. 11, it will feature performances of the works of Goethe, Schiller, Liszt and Bach, each of whom lived in Weimar for a time, by a roster of international artists.Included among the latter will be pianists Barry Douglas, Rudolf Buchbinder and Alexis Weissenberg, violist Kim Kashkashian, cellist Heinrich Schiff, soprano Eva Lind, baritone Alan Titus, the Mannheim and Emerson string quartets, Musica Antiqua Koeln and the Soviet-American Youth Orchestra. There will also be opera and theater performances, the latter in German, by the Resident Theater of Munich and the Jong Enschede Opera Forum of Holland.
