More than 450 inmates at the Attica Correctional Facility disobeyed orders by spending the night in four of the prison's recreation yards, prison officials said Sunday.

There were no reported injuries in the incident, and the 459 prisoners returned to their cells Sunday morning after spending the night in the yards, prison officials said. The maximum-security prison 30 miles outside Buffalo was secured, and officials said they were trying to determine why the inmates refused to leave the recreation yards.

The prison will remain locked down until Monday morning, when the entire facility will be searched for contraband, state Department of Correctional Services spokeswoman Amy Colodny said.

"We've got to do the legwork now to figure out why they did it," Colodny said. "All the inmates will be interviewed."

She said a contraband search was normal after any situation where inmates are grouped together for a long period of time.

She said she could not recall another incident at the prison where inmates spent the night outdoors after refusing to return to their cells.

Attica, the scene of a bloody prison uprising in 1971 during which 43 corrections employees and inmates were killed, currently houses 2,042 inmates, Colodny said.

State Police said they were advised of the situation, and described the incident as "minor."

Colodny said the prisoners in the yards were watched closely overnight. "They weren't going anywhere," she said.
