American women are demanding sophisticated skin products and believeable makeup, Chanel's national makeup artist said during a stop in Utah.

Raul Francisco spent four days in Utah, doing makeup makeovers at ZCMI's Salt Lake and Cottonwood stores. The American woman is a savvy consumer, he said. "Every woman has very pinpointed concerns. They demand more from products. They want to know more."

Women want skin and cosmetic products that do two or three good things at once. A cream that moisturizes the face while it provides sunscreen protection, for example. Chanel has acceded to that demand and is putting sunscreens in most skin products, he said.

Other cosmetic companies are following suit.

American women demand better anti-aging and eye treatment products - something European women have used for years, he said. As a result, cosmetic companies are working fast to develop products that protect women's skin as well as nourish them.

Makeup today is simple, clean and feminine, Francisco said. Today's makeup artists make eyes and lips the focus, while putting only very soft color on the cheeks.

"The look is very clean and understated," he said. Peaches, pinks and soft corals are popular colors this summer. Chanel is also emphasizing beige eyeshadows with darker or brighter accent colors in the outer corner of the eye.

"Think fun," he advised. "Enjoy it. Play with it. Never confine yourself. Too often a woman wears one look all the time. But there are a lot of women inside one woman. That's the fun of it. How boring to have only one look. Makeup is an accessory now. Try variety."
