Sixteen music and performing-arts organizations from around the country have been awarded grants totaling $283,000 to commission new works from 18 jazz composers as the first recipients in the Meet the Composer-Rockefeller Foundation-AT&T Jazz Program.

The Jazz Program is funded by AT&T, the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. This funding partnership represents the largest commitment ever exclusively dedicated to jazz composers, according to Meet the Composer.Meet the Composer, founded in 1974, says it "fosters the creation, performance and recording of work by contemporary American composers and develops new audiences for their work by channeling direct financial assistance to composers working in all musical idioms throughout the U.S."
