SHARE PARTY ENDORSES CANDIDATE - UNTIL HE STARTS TO SPEAK

An Independent Party endorsement of a Libertarian candidate for the Davis County Commission backfired when the candidate revealed he supports legalizing drugs.

County Chairman Dee Tingey announced to delegates at the Independent Party's county convention this weekend that the party was endorsing Larry Livingston for the commission's central-region seat.He then invited Livingston to say a few words.

Convention participants weren't happy when they heard Livingston's remarks about drug legalization.

"I've frankly heard enough," state Independent Party Chairman Merrill Cook said, standing to interrupt Livingston's speech Saturday. "I'm not supporting him."

"Can I finish, though?" asked Livingston.

The delegates of the conservative, grass-roots party sat politely while Livingston finished his talk, but Tingey said later the party was withdrawing its endorsement of Livingston.
