Environmentalists and industrial representatives say the Utah Bureau of Air Quality's plans for reducing particulate pollution fail to attack automobile exhaust.
Representatives from such diverse organizations as Utah Power & Light Co., the Sierra Club, Utah Petroleum Association and Utah Environment Center said attempts to control particulates are doomed unless the state takes aggressive steps to clean up vehicle exhaust and reduce the number of miles driven each day along the Wasatch Front. The comments came at the first of three public hearings on the state's proposed cleanup plan for PM10 - particulates smaller than 10 microns in diameter. Tuesday's meeting was attended by 60 people.
The state plan would prohibit use of fireplaces and most wood-burning stoves in Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties during stagnant periods and would impose controls on major polluters.
The other meetings, starting at 7 p.m., are:
-Provo High School, 1125 N. University Ave., Provo, May 30.
-Clearfield High School, 938 S. 1000 East, Clearfield, May 31.
