The 1990 recipients of the Perlman Award for Excellence in Student Counseling and Advising at the University of Utah are Olga Nadeau, director of Disabled Student Services, and Charlene Doi, Center for Academic Advising.
Olga Nadeau, who has advised disabled U. students since 1980, reassures and helps students relax by being flexible with her time, so that they learn to feel capable of solving their own problems, according to a nomination letter from a student she has helped. Often when students are able to get beyond their own problems, they are then able to see ways they can help others, as well.As an academic adviser for almost 15 years, Doi is a great resource who has a wealth of information and who is always available to students, according to a nomination letter from a peer adviser. Doi began working at the academic advising center after receiving both her undergraduate and master's of social work degrees from the university.
While serving as the satellite academic adviser for women's athletics since 1989, Doi lends support to "her" athletic students by attending less popular athletic events, another nomination letter states.
