Burma's military leader Gen. Saw Maung, in his first official statement on the opposition's triumph in last Sunday's election, said the army would maintain control until it could hand over to a new government.

He made clear the military, which has ruled the country since 1962, still felt it had a duty to intervene to stop any threat to national unity in the impoverished state, racked by ethnic divisions.The opposition National League for Democracy has said it won at least 80 percent of the National Assembly seats contested and plans to call for talks with the army next week about a transfer of power.
