An unsettled weather pattern will carry several weak storm systems and cooler air across the state through Friday.

Meteorologists at the Salt Lake office of the National Weather Service said the forecast for Salt Lake, Ogden and Provo calls for cloudy conditions with showers and thunderstorms at times Thursday through Friday.Brief heavy rain, small hail and gusty, variable winds are possible in the area of thunderstorms. South winds, 15 to 25 mph, were expected to shift to the northwest late Thursday afternoon.

High temperatures in the mid-60s were expected Thursday, and the mercury will drop to the low 40s Thursday night. Highs Friday will be in the upper 50s and low 60s. The chance of measurable rain was 70 percent Thursday and will decrease to 60 percent Friday.

William J. Alder, meteorologist in charge of the Salt Lake office, said several northern Utah areas received welcome amounts of moisture Wednesday. As of Wednesday night, the three-day precipitation total for the Salt Lake Airport was 0.62 inch. For May, the airport's total is 1.38 inches; normal for the month is 1.47 inches.
