Powerful thunderstorms crept out of Texas early Friday following a week of torrential downpours, leaving behind flooding and some tornado damage, while rain fell on parts of the South, the Midwest and mid-Atlantic states.

The National Weather Service reported that just under 26 inches of rain has fallen on north Texas this year, twice the normal amount. Vice President Dan Quayle, who visited flooded areas south of Dallas Thursday, announced that federal aid would be given to Texas counties devastated by high water.The stubborn storm front quietly made its way out of Texas early Friday, but floodwaters were still coursing through the streets of north Texas cities.

Authorities were searching for a fourth person missing and feared drowned when her car was swept into a rain-swollen creek north of Dallas.
