More than 600,000 hours of volunteer time were donated to United Way-funded agencies in the Salt Lake area during 1989, according to information recently compiled by the agency.

That includes about 35,000 hours donated directly to the United Way, reflecting volunteer activity during the annual fund-raising campaign, the yearly allocation of donations and other administrative and research committee functions. It does not include volunteer hours from the Cancer Society or Heart Association, which cooperate as partners in the yearly fund drive, or from several affiliated community funds, like Tooele United Fund, which receive allotments from the drive.

The hours had a value of approximately $8 million, based on hourly rates established by the National Voluntary Action Center for computing the monetary value of volunteer labor.
