Tamil guerrillas executed 49 captured Sri Lankan police officers as they knelt in a row before a rebel firing squad Friday, a Defense Ministry source reported.

The latest wave of fighting brought to more than 150 the number of government security force police killed since a cease-fire was shattered early this week, touching off the heaviest fighting between the rebels and government forces in more than a year.Violence over the past four days has claimed at least 450 lives in northern and eastern provinces, authorities said.
