A man catching a nap in a garbage bin was scooped up by a disposal truck that began crushing the load, breaking the sleeper's leg before a passerby heard screams and alerted the driver.
"I heard him yell `Help!' and I thought it was a guy singing into a radio," said passerby Bobby J. Sanders, an Alaska fisherman."I never thought there would be anybody inside a garbage truck."
Taylor Glenn Doughty, a transient, recalled being squashed twice before the machinery stopped, police said after questioning him at a hospital.
The truck operator believes he inadvertently picked up Doughty at a paper company about three blocks from where the rescue was made late Thursday, police said.
Doughty said he couldn't be sure where he was picked up, because "I was pretty snockered."
