CAR-VAN COLLISION ON U.S. -40 KILLS BOY FROM ROOSEVLET, HURTS 6 OTHER YOUTHS

A Roosevelt youth died and six others were injured in a car-van accident Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on U.S.-40 east of Myton.

KILLED:John Nebeker, 14, of Roosevelt. Seven youths and their adult leader were returning to Roosevelt from a church outing in Provo when the accident occurred. The Duchesne County sheriff's office said the youths were eastbound on U.S.-40 in a van driven by Lynette Gardner, 37, of Roosevelt, when the vehicle and a car driven by Evelynn Murphy, 75, of Provo, collided.

The collision occurred as the Gardner van was coming off a hill and the Murphy vehicle attempted to make a left-hand turn west onto the highway, the sheriff's office reported. The collision caused the van to roll twice down the hill, ejecting all seven youths.

Nebeker died at the scene of the accident of massive head injuries.

Two passengers were taken by Life Flight to Salt Lake hospitals. Brandon Wright, 14, of Roosevelt, was in serious condition in Primary Children's Hospital while the other youth, a girl whose name was being withheld, remained in critical condition in LDS Hospital. Three others were taken to Duchesne County Hospital, and one of the youths was treated and released.

Gardner and Murphy, who were both wearing seat belts, were not injured, the sheriff's office reported.
