Oakland Athletics outfielder Jose Canseco, complaining of lower back pain, checked into a hospital Saturday for tests and observation of a sciatic nerve condition.
Oakland Athletics team physician Dr. Allan Pont said Canseco underwent a C.T. scan of his spine, which is a computerized view of lower back and discs. He will remain at Children's Hospital "for a couple of days," Pont said."We got him off his feet," Pont said. "It should help him get rid of the muscle spasms. The clinical condition is most important to us."
Pont said Canseco, who has a history of back problems, started experiencing increased pain from his lower back down through his right leg before this weekend's series at Oakland against Kansas City. Canseco has not played since last Thursday at Texas and will not be available Sunday against the Royals.
Pending further test results, Canseco is expected to rejoin the team Monday. Pont did not say when he expects test results.
Canseco, batting .320, leads the A's with 20 home runs and 50 RBIs, second in the majors in both categories to Detroit's Cecil Fielder, who has 22 homers and 55 RBIs.
