SENIORS MENS' ROAD RACE ENDS IN CONTROVERSY

The USCF district road race bicycling championships were staged Saturday, with a controversial ending in the Senior Men's competition.

Salt Lakers Chris Rogers, Dell Despain and Scott Lung were declared winners in the Senior Men (Categories 1 through 3), but only after their names were drawn from a hat. According to USCF district representative Del Brown, those three racers and two others purposely crossed the finish line together. Of the five, Rogers was declared winner, followed by Despain and Lung.Brown said four of the five winning riders were from different clubs. "A five-way tie that had to be settled by drawing their positions out of a hat left fans and sponsors disappointed," said Brown. "It's an anticlimactic way to resolve the most important race of the season."

Brown added that the results are pending a USCF investigation.

In Senior Women (Categories 1 through 3), Rebecca Kauffman of Park City was the winner, followed by Anne Weiland and Laura Howat of Salt Lake.

Christian Beattie of Provo took the Junior Men 18 race, followed by Robert Williams, Orem, and Steve Tibbitts, Kaysville.

Other men's winners were Curtis Williams, Orem, in Juniors 16; Ed Chauner, Salt Lake, Masters 30-34; Tom Noaker, Oakley, Masters 35; Alan Stockland, Ogden, Masters 45; and Jay Salazar, Salt Lake, Category 4.

Other women's winners were Sally DeSonia, Salt Lake, Masters and Lee Ann Mortensen, Salt Lake, Category 4.
