The nation's largest Protestant denomi-inr1nation is firmly in fundamentalist hands after moderates were easily defeated in what many considered their last chance for the presidency of the Southern Baptists.
The Rev. Morris Chapman of Wichita Falls, Texas, the fundamentalist candidate, won 58 percent of the vote Tuesday in defeating the Rev. Daniel Vestal of suburban Atlanta, 21,471 to 15,753."I trust that after 12 consecutive years, we can consider the issue settled. For a lot of us are weary," said Chapman, who won by the largest margin of a non-incumbent since fundamentalists began their string of presidential victories in 1979.
