CACHE CHAMBER CHIEF WANTS LIBRARY TO END $25 FEE FOR NON-RESIDENTS

The executive director of the Cache County Chamber of Commerce says the Logan Library should stop charging non-resident users a $25 fee because that fee is hurting the city's business community.

Doug Thompson, who met with the municipal council at a budget workshop Wednesday, said a recent retail survey conducted by the chamber showed that many county residents don't shop in Logan because they still are upset about the library decision. The fee was imposed in 1987 under former mayor Newell Daines after construction of the new library-city office complex was completed.

Shortly before he left office last year, Daines recommended that the council eliminate the fee, calling the decision "the most controversial issue during my eight years in office."

During his campaign, current Mayor Russ Fjeldsted also pledged to do all he could to see that free library service was restored to non-city residents.
