Nichole Hillburn, right, finds herself a wee bit out of step with Mindy McQueen and Jodi Kidd as the tartan-ed trio display the intricate footwork of the Highland Fling during competition Saturday at the 16th annual Scottish Festival. Scottish feet were flinging to the wailing of bagpipers, as local clans gathered at Cottonwood Park. The traditional competitions originated in Northern Scotland, when kings and chiefs organized games to select leaders through demonstrations of military prowess. Now a cultural celebration, the event drew local residents who spent the day boasting of their ties to the land of moors. Former Gov. Scott Matheson, who dressed in the tartan of his clan from Dundee, Scotland, served as chieftain for the day.
