ARIZONA HOUSE GIVES SALES TAX INITIAL OK

The Arizona House has given tentative approval to a measure that would give the state's 13 rural counties the authority to impose a sales tax.

The taxing provision, which would apply to all the counties except Maricopa and was adopted as an amendment.Under the amendment, a county sales tax could be imposed with the unanimous vote of the board of supervisors of any of the 13 rural counties. The limit would be one-half percent except for Yuma County where a tax of up to 1 percent could be imposed for one year to allow the county to pay off bills for indigent health care.
