SRI LANKA ARMY REPULSES ATTACK AS WAR SPREADS

Government forces overran Tamil rebel positions in the east on Tuesday and repulsed an attack on an army garrison in the north as bitter ethnic rivalries escalated into full-fledged war, officials said.

The army used helicopter gunships and machine-gun fire to repulse an early morning attack by rebels on the Jaffna military garrison, said military officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.Jaffna, 190 miles north of Colombo on this Indian Ocean island nation, is headquarters to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, the main rebel milita.
