The Seattle Mariners traded outfielder-third baseman Darnell Coles to Detroit on Monday for outfielder Tracy Jones, marking the second time the M's have sent Coles to Detroit.
The first was in December 1985, in return for pitcher Rich Monteleone. The 28-year-old former Salt Lake Gull has struggled to push his batting average over .200 much of this season. As of Sunday he was batting .215 with two home runs and 16 RBIs in 37 games.
Jones is batting .229 this season with four home runs and nine RBIs in 50 games. He may be the most likely replacement for Jay Buhner, who suffered a broken bone in his arm in last Saturday's game against Texas when he was hit by a pitch. Buhner is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.
Jones, 29, made his major league debut with Cincinnati in 1986 and played with the Reds until 1988. He posted his best marks in 1987, batting .290 with 10 home runs, 44 RBIs and 31 stolen bases in 117 games.
