Pope John Paul II embraces the Dalai Lama prior to meeting at the Vatican Friday. The Dalai Lama, exiled spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, discussed world peace and other "important problems of humanity" with the pope, the Vatican announced. The 54-year-old Buddhist leader, in exile from his China-occupied country since 1959, has been in Italy since May 24, seeking support for his people. He has already visited Venice, Milan, Florence and Siena, meeting religious leaders and addressing public meetings on the situation in Tibet. A Vatican statement did not say whether they discussed the situation in Tibet.
