SEVERED CABLE TAKES POWER OUT OF AIRPORT TOWER

Electrical workers tearing out old equipment at O'Hare International Airport accidentally severed a cable Friday, disrupting communications between the tower and the Air Traffic Control Center for more than an hour.

Barbara Dettmer, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the communications break forced the cancellation of all departing flights and caused delays to inbound flights.Illinois Bell spokeswoman Floria Pope said the break occurred at 10:41 a.m. and was fixed at noon.

"It affected 142 computer systems that control 3,408 lines," Pope said. "But we don't know exactly how many lines went out."
