JUDGE DENIES A REQUEST FOR TRIAL IN MURDER ATTEMPT

A judge has denied a motion from a Clinton man seeking to withdraw his plea of guilty but mentally ill to an attempted murder charge stemming from a car crash last winter.

David Thayne Jones, 32, had entered the plea in February and was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. He returned to court Monday, asking to withdraw the plea and proceed with a trial. The request was denied without comment by 2nd District Judge Stanton Taylor.

Jones was arrested after police chased him down Riverdale Road and he crashed his car into a vehicle he thought his former girlfriend was riding in. The woman who was hit, 22-year-old Cherie Bambrough, sustained minor injuries.

In exchange for his guilty plea, charges of evading, driving with a suspended license, speeding and possession of drug paraphernalia were dismissed.

Jones told Taylor Monday he never intended to kill anybody.

"I wasn't fully aware of what was going on." he said. "It seems to me that I'm going crazy. It's really complicated."
