49 KILLED IN SRI LANKAN VIOLENCE

Heavy fighting between troops and Tamil rebels in northern Sri Lanka left at least 49 people dead Wednesday, including 10 villagers killed by jungle land mines while fleeing their homes, a military source said.

In New Delhi, India, former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, whose administration engineered a failed 1987 military attempt to end ethnic violence in Sri Lanka, said Wednesday the fighting in the island nation threatened India's security interests.In one of the worst incidents in Sri Lanka Wednesday, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam used grenade launchers and machine guns to attack a Sinhalese village near Kondaichchi, about 120 miles north of Colombo.
