Word is that "Head of the Class" has already replaced the just-departed Howard Hesseman with another Howard - funnyman Howie Mandel.

Mandel is best known for portraying Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the late, lamented "St. Elsewhere."Of course, he's also known for putting surgical gloves over his head and inflating them. And he's the voice of Gizmo in the "Gremlins" movies.

We'll have to wait and see which of the above he comes closest to with his new "Class" character.

The show resumes production this summer, and - despite not having a spot on the fall schedule - will be back sometime this coming season.

UTAH VIDEOS: Just when you thought it was safe to watch TV (no new "America's Funniest Home Videos") comes word that "Utah's Funniest Home Videos is on the way.

Sponsored by KXIV-Ch. 14, KMGR-FM (Magic 107.5) and RC Willey, there are three competition categories: (1) Funniest Home Video; (2) Most Creative Video (which can be a staged event - oh, great); and (3) Best (30-second) Magic 107.5 Commercial.

We knew this was going to be a commercial event, right?

Entries can be dropped off at any RC Willey location by July 7. The winners will be announced on a half-hour show Sunday, July 29 on Ch. 14.

Here's your chance to make a complete fool of yourself for the chance to win a big-screen TV, a trip to Disneyland or a new VCR.

DESIGNING CHANGES: A couple of things will be different when "Designing Women" returns in the fall.

First, Julia Sugarbaker's beau, Reese (played by Dixie Carter's real-life husband, Hal Holbrook), will have died of a heart attack. The sudden death was brought on by the fact that Holbrook is going to be starring in "Evening Shade," a new sitcom from the producers of "Women."

And delivery man Anthony (Meshack Taylor) will no longer be a delivery man - he's bought into the business and is a full-fledged partner.

MUSICAL CHAIRS: The network hopping by sportscasters continues, and this time its Utah's own Merlin Olsen making the jump.

The former Utah State Aggie is leaving NBC after 13 years to join CBS.

After almost a dozen years and five Super Bowls teamed with Dick Enberg as NBC's top football duo, Olsen was demoted last year and replaced by former 49ers coach Bill Walsh.

Olsen won't be on the No. 1 team at CBS, either - that's still Pat Summerall and John Madden. Although there's no official word yet, expect to see him on the No. 2 team with Verne Lundquist.

Lundquist's former partner, ex-Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw, is jumping to the studio as a member of the "NFL Today" team.

LOVE BOAT WINNERS: Mr. and Mrs. Steven Einfeldt of Kaysville will be setting sail next January after winning the Channel Five Love Boat Cruise Contest drawing.

To qualify for the drawing, viewers had to watch the "Love Boat" at 11:05 p.m. Monday-Friday and answer questions about the show.

Congratulations, Einfeldts, but did winning a two-week cruise make watching all those "Love Boat" reruns worthwhile? (Yuck!)
