TENNESSEE RITES PLANNED FOR ZION EMPLOYEE

Funeral services will be held in Martin, Tenn., on Monday for a seasonal employee of Zion National Park who fell to his death Wednesday.

John Ethridge, 40, was killed when he lost his footing on a trail in the Hidden Canyon area of the park and fell off a cliff. The Tennessee native, who was employed as a naturalist, was leading a group on a hike about 10:30 a.m. when he turned to address the crowd and a rock gave way under his feet, causing him to plunge 175 feet to the canyon floor, authorities said.

Park authorities could not reach the body until about 11:20 a.m., and Ethridge was pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m.

Ethridge had also worked in the park for the past 11 years as a back-country ranger, fire-control officer, and in park maintenance and law enforcement.
