Her Majesty Queen Noor of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan recently greeted 180 Church members at a reception in the Royal Palace.
The occasion was the visit of students from the BYU Jerusalem Center. "The queen's graciousness and generosity were very evident as she spent almost two hours shaking hands and chatting with students, faculty and members of the LDS branch in Amman," said Vernon J. Tipton, director of the Church's Center for Cultural and Educational Affairs in Jordan. The group was treated to a traditional Arab dinner the next evening on the grounds of the country home of Gen. El Fayez, commander of the Royal Guard.
The BYU group was accompanied by Mohammad Kamal of the Jordanian Senate, through whose efforts the visit to the palace was arranged. Sen. Kamal is Jordan's former ambassador to the United States.
In 1989, Jordan approved registration of the Church's Center for Cultural and Educational Affairs.
