THOUSANDS MOURN DEATH OF UNION ACTIVIST IN HAITI

Thousands of factory workers stayed home and most stores and gas stations closed Saturday to mourn a union activist who was shot to death Thursday while attending a meeting of the governing Council of State.

Two leading politicians demanded the resignation of civilian President Ertha Pascal-Trouillot, who has been blamed for the army's failure to halt a recent crime wave.Pascal-Trouillot has governed along with the 19-member Council of State since her appointment in March.

Early Saturday, sporadic gunfire rang out in the slums of Port-au-Prince, but most public buses were running and the capital of 1 million people remained busy.
