Iran-Contra defendant Richard Secord is dropping an appeal of his conviction on charges of lying to a congressional investigator, a federal prosecutor's office said Saturday.

Secord agreed to drop the appeal in papers filed Friday, said Mary Belcher, spokeswoman for independent counsel Lawrence Walsh. The retired Air Force general had pleaded guilty last year to one felony count as part of a plea bargaining agreement under which Walsh agreed not to pursue 11 other felony charges against Secord.

Walsh said Secord's appeal violated the spirit of the plea bargaining agreement and he threatened to put Secord on trial on all 12 original charges.

The two have reached an agreement under which Secord's conviction will stand and Walsh will not pursue other charges, Belcher said.
