CAPTION ONLY: COOLING OFF TIME

Bonnie McKay, 6, Bennion, Salt Lake County, takes a hard fall while running to cruise down a water slide and cool off from 100-degree temperatures that cooked the Salt Lake area Monday. It was 101 degrees Sunday, and the mercury is expected to reach 100 or more degrees Tuesday. But things may cool by a degree or two Wednesday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Peter Wilensky. Salt Lake's heat seemed mild compared with the record of 120 degrees set Monday at Phoenix. Lows tonight will range in the 60s to low 70s in Salt Lake, Ogden and Provo. Statewide, the forecast is the same, except for widely scattered thunderstorms in the southeast. Thunderstorms will be isolated elsewhere, Wilensky said.
