What was first reported as a random drive-by shooting early Wednesday turned out to be an accidental discharge from a dropped gun, police report.
An 18-year-old east-side man had been jogging with his sister, 17, along 800 East just after midnight Tuesday when a bullet struck the girl in the chest under the arm. . The pair told responding officers that she was the victim of a drive-by shooting. However, they later told officer Kim Albrecht that the brother was carrying a .22 caliber weapon when it fell out of his pocket, hit the sidewalk and discharged.The girl was taken to the University of Utah Medical Center, where she was listed in fair and stable condition Tuesday evening.
