Virginia's Gov. Doug Wilder says its just friendship with Patricia Kluge, the estranged wife of the richest man in the country, even though newspapers are reporting they've been spending weekends together.
Kluge, 41, split from media mogul John Kluge, whose fortune is estimated at $5.2 billion, two months ago, citing irreconcilable differences and both contributed to Wilder's successful campaign to become the nation's first black governor. The Roanoke Times & World-News says Wilder, 59, who has been divorced for several years, and Patricia Kluge spent Memorial Day weekend at Camp Pendleton near Virginia Beach and that they also went to Nantucket Island off the Massachusetts coast for four days in June.
Wilder also has made frequent trips to Charlottesville, where Kluge lives in a 45-room mansion given to her by her husband. Wilder's explanation is: "We're friends. Both of the Kluges are friends and that is it."
