Gov. Norm Bangerter has declared June 9 as Free Fishing Day, a day when anyone can fish without a license, officials said.
Fishing derbies, clinics and other activities have been scheduled to celebrate the day during Utah Fishing Week June 4-10.Wheeler Farm will host one of the largest events in which children will be able to fish for free from a heavily stocked trout pond.
Bangerter designated fishing week and day to introduce new anglers to sport fishing and to reintroduce former fishermen who may have drifted away from the sport.
"We encourage people to take advantage of this day by participating in the activities and `get hooked on fishing' ", the governor said.
