Nearly 400 girls from high schools across the state will participate in Utah Girls State activities June 10-16 on the campus of Southern Utah State.
Sponsored by the Utah American Legion Auxiliary, the program provides experience-based training in the processes involved in party politics and in local and state government functions. During the week of activity, participants hold political party caucuses and county and state organizing conventions.Girls State sessions are primarily directed by mock state officials elected by Girls State citizens last year to come back to govern in 1990.
Melissa Meng, Logan, will be governor of Girls State. She will be assisted by Lieutenant Governor Heidi Ward, Heber City, and Girls Nation Senators Libbie Osorn, Salt Lake City, and Melanie Selcho, Sandy.
All Girls State participants will be seniors in high school this fall. They will study the administrative, legislative, and judicial structures of each local and state level of government.
