SPRINGVILLE BRINGING `ART' BACK INTO ART CITY DAYS

Organizers of this year's Art City Days celebration say they're trying to put the "art" back into the citywide festivities.

For example, this year's celebration - the city's 20th overall - includes not only the expected Springville Playhouse comedy, but an Art City Community Theater production of the self-proclaimed longest-running show on Broadway, "Bull in a China Shop," co-chairman Lee Measom said. But that's only the beginning of the celebration's activities, Measom said.

Photography shows, statewide quilt expositions, flower shows, arts and craft boutiques and a tour of Springville's city's 27 historic homes also demonstrate that the city has its roots firmly planted as one of the state's leading arts communities.

"Sure we're just a little folksy, bed-roomy-type community," Measom said. "But every year we help put on the World Folkfest, and we do stress the arts here."

In addition, this year's festivities celebrate the opening of the city's art shop, formerly an industrial arts shop that has received National Endowment for the Arts funding during its renovation, Measom said.

"The whole city is excited about the opening and we've decided that Art City Days should reflect that excitement. We've got activities that can involve everyone, including road races and car shows. Arts provide the background for our celebrations, but it's not the whole thing."
