Bill Buckner, who won a job in spring training after signing a minor league contract at age 40, was released by the Boston Red Sox.

Buckner was let go to make room on the 25-player roster for right-handed reliever Jeff Gray, who was called up from Pawtucket of the International League. Buckner appeared in 22 games, batting .186 with one homer and three RBIs.In parts of 22 seasons in the major leagues, Buckner had 2,715 hits. In addition to Boston, he played for Los Angeles, the Chicago Cubs, California and Kansas City.
