Winners have been announced in the fourth annual essay contest on the vital role of the humane use of animals in medical research. The contest is sponsored by the Committee for Animals in Research and Education in Utah.

CARE-Utah, a community group that supports medical research using animals, undertakes various activities to inform the public about the need for and benefit from such scientific investigation.Jackie Perry, a senior at Springville High School, won the first-place $500 award. Runners-up, Shauna Lorenzo-Rivero, Olympus High School, and Suzanne Phipps, Granger High School, received $100 awards.

The essay topic was "The Animal-Human Team: Partners in Medical Progress for the Benefit of Both."

The awards were presented by CARE-Utah President Colleen Malouf at a recent luncheon at the University of Utah Medical Center. More than 13 high school were represented in the entries, Malouf said.
