SNOW GETS GRANT TO BUY SPECTROMETER

Snow College has received a matching grant from the National Science Foundation to purchase a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer.

School officials said the $19,000 instrument will give students the much needed hands-on experience of working with state-of-the-art equipment. The instrument will allow organic-chemistry students to identify unknowns, follow reaction progress, identify products and help establish purity of synthesized compounds. Freshman chemistry students will use the instrument to identify functional groups and common polymers in their laboratory introduction to organic chemistry. The instrument and associated software will also be used to develop scientific interest and curiosity in introductory chemistry students and outstanding high school students in the area.
