Eight college students have been honored for launching successful small businesses.

The students received cash awards, sponsored by IBM and Novell, as part of the Collegiate Enterprise Award Program. They were presented at the fifth annual Governor's Conference on Economic Development and Education.Derek W. Smith, University of Utah junior, won the first-place $5,000 award for establishing, with non-student partner Russell Releya, the University Film Group, which produces college and university mass-media recruitment videos.

Others winners and their businesses are: Robert D. Hill, U. of U., Yearbooks Unlimited; Judy English, Weber State College, painting-decorating-maintenance firm; Kevin Lindsay, first-aid and emergency equipment firm; Deborah P. Cornic, Salt Lake Community College, specialty T-shirt company; Rod E. Cottle, WSC, and Robert J. Fuller, Utah State University, international trade organization; and Laura L. Lowe, USU, development company.
