A 16-year-old Salt Lake girl was killed Wednesday when she fell about 150 feet down a rugged slope while hiking.
Brittany Pasborg, 1997 S. Scenic Drive, died after she slipped on some wet rocks, lost her balance and fell about 150 feet down a very steep incline and cliff, Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs said. The accident occurred about 11:15 a.m. near the permanent LDS vault and the power plant in the canyon at 5700 East on the north side of the highway.
Pasborg and a hiking companion, Sterling Lee, 18, were climbing in what officers called an "almost technical" climbing area when the accident occurred.
After the fall, Lee attempted CPR on the victim, but she had no pulse and was not breathing. When deputy sheriffs and paramedics arrived, they worked on the girl, but were unable to revive her.
It was the second hiking death in the canyon in five days. On Saturday, 10-year-old Toni Shelton was hiking farther up the canyon with a 10-year-old boy and his mother when the girl was crushed by a large boulder. The 300- to 400-pound rock rolled on top of Shelton, and her companions were unable to move it.
Another accident Wednesday seriously injured Chris Plant, 18, of Salt Lake City. He survived a 30-foot fall off a cliff in Ferguson Canyon when he lost his balance and slipped.
