MAFIA, CARTEL LINKED IN 2 DRUG CONVICTIONS

A man authorities linked to the Sicilian Mafia and the Medellin cocaine cartel was convicted with one other defendant Thursday of selling Colombian cocaine to the underworld in Italy.

A federal court jury convicted John Galatolo, 44, who was described as the head of the drug ring, on 28 of the 34 racketeering, drug and consipracy counts included in an indictment returned last year against him and 11 others. He was charged in every count in the indictment.Codefendant Luis Miguel, 41, was convicted on all 13 counts he faced, and Angelo Fontana, 26, a third defendant, was acquitted of all seven counts he faced.

The FBI heralded the case as the first where a link between the Sicilian Mafia and the Medellin cartel came out in court.
