The $190 million Flamingo Hilton-Laughlin hotel-casino, scheduled to open Aug. 1, won Nevada Gaming Control Board approval Wednesday to operate a 50,000 square-foot casino with 1,500 slot machines and 43 live table games.

Hilton executive John Giovenco told the board the resort, located in the Colorado River gaming boomtown 100 miles from Las Vegas, would employ 1,800 people selected from 6,000 applicants.Gary Gregg, vice president and general manager of the Laughlin hotel-casino, said a $600,000 newspaper advertising campaign would be launched to target Southern California and Phoenix customers.

The hotel's 2,000 rooms will go on line over a period of several days beginning Aug. 1 to allow employees to adjust to their new jobs, said Giovenco. He said 50 percent of the job applicants had no gaming-resort work history.
